Realism aims at a photograph rather than a drawing: correct proportion, real light, and no outline anywhere. It is done in black and grey or in full color, and it covers portraits of people, animals, eyes, hands, film stills and anything else you can bring a reference photo of.

More than in any other style, the artist is the whole product. Realism has almost no margin for error — a jaw a few millimetres off, or shading a shade too dark under an eye, and the portrait stops looking like the person. Artists who are genuinely good at it usually do very little else, and their portfolios show the same subject matter over and over.

It also depends on your reference. A sharp, well-lit, high-resolution photo produces a good tattoo; a dark phone screenshot does not, no matter who is holding the machine. Send the best photograph you have when you request a quote, and expect a good artist to ask for a better one.
